Restaurant Railing Project Aiea, Hawaii

Ah-hoy Diners!

Uncle’s Fish Market & Grill at Pearlridge takes you back to the simple life in Hawaii but that’s not what makes this restaurant famous. What does is their amazing selection of seafood caught daily to impress locals and visitors alike.

So when it came to updating the outside railing to accommodate patronage better, they sought the simplicity in a dynamic railing system from one of the top fabricators in the state. Stanford Yacht Tenders took its extensive background in marine and vessel builds to give a safe harbor feel to the land-based mall exterior.

Leaving the top rail a natural wood, the powder-coated railing project is traditional in design with a dark bronze two coat powder coating system by Maui Powder Works | Powder Coating Hawaii. Threaded steel completes the yacht-ie appeal.

Additionally, beautifully crafted metal fish flank either side of the main entrance to entice the diner of what’s to be found inside! The freshest fish found in Hawaii.

DKIST Solar Telescope Aperture
Haleakala, Maui

In honor of total solar eclipse over Argentina and Chile on July 2, 2019, we thought we’d share our DKIST National Solar Observatory aperture project. Located on Haleakala which means House of the Sun in Hawaiian.

Although not very old, DKIST solar telescope aperture, part of the space telescope, was suffering from premature decay in the form of severe erosion to its exposed surface metals.

Tethering the Sun

Even the hero-god Maui, who lassoed the sun’s rays, would approve of what we accomplished in a matter of a couple of weeks.

Maui tethers the sun photo credit: http://www.incrediblestoriespodcast.com

That’s when observatory scientists reach out to us for help. They wanted to know if there was a coating tough enough to withstand the sun’s harsh rays.  Because of its mixed metal fabrication containing brass, copper, and aluminum the thin aerospace paint which was applied before installation wasn’t holding up.

Needless to say, when it comes to saving the world rest assured these scientists did their homework when they chose Tiger Drylac Super Durable 061/80079 (Black Anodized Effect) It worked well and met their optical and absorption requirements(it gets hot around a giant piece of glass pointing at the sun)

The pieces were dissembled into three 15ft arched segments which were loaded into our blast facility. After abrasive blasting, each one had to be carefully handled and moved for each phase of the 5-stage restoration process. To meet the minimum finish requirements the DKIST Team needed we used Tiger’s Dryprotector Primer. Its superior adherence and moisture protection. It was key to the whole application process.

Muscle the hustle

Here at the Maui Powder Works shop, we’ve been debating if our new slogan should be

Powder Coating: Saving one planet at a time!

No joke when I asked about looking for asteroids to hit the earth anytime soon the lead scientist said, “…its the CMEs from the sun we have to worry about.” Yikes! TMI

This was an all hands on deck effort for all involved.  A shout of appreciation goes to our rep Sandra Kresz at Tiger Drylac for all the hustle she put in to get us samples to us quickly for testing and answered any technical questions immediately.

Please, no negative comments on telescopes in Hawaii.

Leilani’s Restaurant, Kaanapali, Maui

In the spring of 2018, Leilani’s a favorite of both tourists and locals renovated their upstairs dining space with new surfaces, fixtures, and metalwork.  The contractor, Honolulu Builders was poised to bring the vision together for the island to enjoy again in a new well-designed ohana style dining space.

New railings are just the latest updates to this popular restaurant in Kaanapali. Located in picturesque West Maui. It’s a must-see!

The project included custom powder coated railings, enclosures, and handrails spanning up to 20 feet in length. Fabricated by local welders using substrates from aluminum to hard steel, The custom pieces included both curved, jogged and staggard for both functionality and a unique island look.

To keep a lasting beauty over time an AAMA 2604 compliant coating system was chosen.  The two-coat application consisted of a primer zinc coating before the final color coat.

Can you powder coat spoked rims? https://mauipowderworks.com/can-you-powder-coat-spoked-rims/ Sun, 09 Jun 2019 21:20:42 +0000 https://mauipowderworks.com/?p=6380 The post Can you powder coat spoked rims? appeared first on Maui Powder Works.

There are two approaches to powder coating spoked or laced rims on cars, motorcycles, and bikes.

One, leave them in place and powder coat over them.

Or two, remove and powder coat separately.

Making the best decision

If you’ve got dirt bike rims, spoke rims on bikes and motorcycles or cars that you’re looking to get powder coated, the question you need to ask is:

To take apart or… to not take apart?

Aside from the cost in additional labor using the second approach, powder coating them in place means that in the long term they cannot be taken apart. They will be entirely coated and non-removable.

That’s great for maintenance, however, if you’re wanting the full and complete restoration to spoked rims consider the longevity of the project at hand. You will need to how long are you keeping it or what level of restoration are you wanting to achieve with these spoked rims.

Show your style with powder coating

Wanting to update your car in a way that doesn’t break the bank? Try powder coating your rims.

Use this rim refinishing cost calculator to estimate how much your rims will cost to powder coat.

Powder coating is becoming a common application for customizing cars, trucks, and motorcycles because of the fast growth in custom coaters and consumers looking to stand out on the road.

Now more than ever auto enthusiasts are able to find these small job shops to get their everyday automotive and residential projects done locally.

That’s why we’ve created this rim refinishing cost estimator. To help you get an idea on what the average cost of powder coat rims is so that you can decide whether to powder coat or buy new rims.

This powder coat rims cost calculator includes all the work necessary to complete a set of rims by size and finish in either a single coat color application or a two-coat system like transparent, illusions and candy colors.

Know before you go

Before using this calculator you will need to know your rim measurements.

If you need help measuring your rims you can download our free rim guide which takes you through all the steps you need to do before calling your nearby powder coater.

The basic services you should expect using this price estimator are stripping, sandblasting and possibly a metal prep wash. Washes can be offered for aluminum wheels or as a rust inhibitor for steel before the final coating process. Read more on the powder coat process.

How to use this calculator

The cost calculator does not include any additional services. Rim repairs, welding, dismounting, tire replacement,  taping and masking, two-tone(two color block), custom colors or special color, etc are usually all additional. Please check with your local coater about these additional services.

Again this is to be used for general purposes only on what is the average cost of powder coating rims and we make no claims on the type or quality of work expected from any powder coater you choose.

Many top-notch custom coaters can and will charge more for their services.

The reader should become somewhat knowledgeable about powder coating before seeking an applicator or jobber. You can find many more helpful articles on our blog.

Can you powder coat the rubber part of a wheel? https://mauipowderworks.com/can-you-powder-coat-rubber-part-of-a-wheel/ Fri, 19 Oct 2018 01:59:00 +0000 https://mauipowderworks.com/?p=4324 The post Can you powder coat the rubber part of a wheel? appeared first on Maui Powder Works.

Behind The Scenes: Top 5 Questions About Powder Coating Answered.

As a powder coater, we get asked a lot of questions about powder coating like -can you powder coat wheel with tires on? Nothing is too obscure or off limits. The more our followers know the better informed they are to make the best choices.  In this post, we’ve summed up the top 5 burning questions you may have right now.

1. Can you powder coat the rubber part of a wheel? For the most part, high oven temperatures, exceeding 300+ degrees are the main reason why it’s not a good idea to powder coat tires or parts that have rubber and plastic left on them. Although there are low temp setting powders and ovens available for coating they are the exception, not the rule.  That said you should check with your powder coater to see if they offer in-house services where they can remove or replace your tires and parts like stems while getting the rims restored.  Many offer same day or quick turn around.

Download my free infographics

2. Can you clear coat over powder coat? You can apply a liquid acrylic, resin or lacquer based finish to any newly powder coated surface.  Surface prep is minimal and it is best to not sand the finish prior but to go right over the existing finish as long as it is dust free.  But did you know that powders also come in various clears and wet finishes?  They are superior durability and extremely low maintenance.  Consider that when you are deciding what to do.

3. Can you powder coat over paint? You can sometimes,  but don’t expect great results. Just as heat makes powder flash and melds to metal the opposite effect can happen with common household liquid paints when exposed to high temps over 200 degrees.  Sandblasting is the only solution to fully prepping a surface before powder coating because not only does it raise the surface to for good adherence but it completely removes the paint and debris that may liquify while curing in the oven.

4. How do I determine if it’s powder coated or painted? Powder coating is resistant to acetone. The easiest way to determine if the surface has been powder coated is to do a simple chemical stress test using acetone. First, find an area that is not highly visible. Then using a q-tip or cotton cloth wet the surface with acetone and gently rub the surface.  If matter build-up appears on the applicator surface that is anything but grime then it is painted.  You may also see distortion in the object’s surface finish as well where you tested. So be careful where you test!  If it is powder coated it will not be affected

5. Paint vs Powder Coating. What’s the fundamental difference? The difference between paint and powder coating is not obvious at first. Powder paints are dry and bond to metal during the heating process called curing.  Liquid paints cure too and are visibly viscous for ease of use on general porous and preferably flat surfaces but do not bond.  What makes powder paints extremely ideal for metal is that by applying them through the electrolysis process the adherence and coverage ratios can be much higher than traditional painting. No drips + low surface imperfections = the perfect finish.  However, the best advantage to powder coating is not what you see but what you don’t see. Durability over time!  Powder coating withstands cracking, fading, peeling, chipping and is chemical resistant. It doesn’t need maintenance, regular upkeep or re-coating over time.

For more information on how long it takes to get your rims powder coated read this blog post.

Going over what your getting is important

The most overlooked aspect of powder coating is knowing the level of restoration you’re going to get for that perfect powder coat finish.

When going to your local coater be sure to ask how they go about restoring your project.  Most quality custom coaters use a 5-stage restoration process to make sure your project gets done right. When you’re working on your prized or sentimental project it’s important to know that you’re getting it done right so be sure ask so you know what you’re getting into because restoration can be expensive and time-consuming.

1. Stripping is a chemical process using a compound called methylene chloride which activates the paint to bubble up and pull away from the surface to be removed with an abrasive tool like steel brush, steel wool or paint scraper.

2. Blasting through a pressure pot at a high psi(air pressure) and is next to help remove the excess paint left over from stripping and raise the metal surface to bond better to the new coating. There are few different kinds of media available which when combined with pressurized air become the ideal dry prep

Download my free infographics

3. Metal Prep Wash should be used especially when older metal or grimy parts are being done. There are (alkaline) salt remover solutions and acid-based solutions depending on the type of metal being powder coated. They help in removing extra fine debris and mil-scale rust or corrosion not seen by the naked eye.

4. Powder Coat & Curing is by where the metal is electrically charged to attract the powder particles then baked at temperatures not exceeding 500 degrees with specific time limits.  When the powder is cured it means that the powder has bonded together(flowed out) and fully harden when the metal cools

5. Inspection is the very last step to ensure that the finish is lacking cross-contamination and other surface issues like outgassing, peeling, and fish-eye which can be common issues in restoration. Be sure to go over your project with you powder coater at the time of pick up.

A final note: To help customers search for quality coatings there are powder coater member groups which custom coaters can be affiliated.  One of them is called the Powder Coating Institute (PCI). Those needing powder coating services can search their directory for coaters in their area who are committed to providing a certain level of standards.

Introducing Patina Powder Coat

Innovation is happening rapidly in the powder coating industry, from powders reaching new heights in durability and longevity to custom coater creatives.  It’s an exciting time to be in this industry. With projected hi-growth into the second decade, you can expect powder coating to touch aspects of architecture, automotive and home goods like never before.

So it is with great pleasure that Maui Powder Works, a local powder coater serving all-islands, introduces a new twist on achieving a realistic patina copper effect to metal in a non-traditional way. We call it Patina simulation with powder coating or a non-living patina versus a living finish or an induced effect.

Ross Scott, the owner of Maui Powder Works and his new line of Powder Effects,  credits his outcome on working 15 years in furniture refinishing before getting into the metal coating business.

“Our patina effect is perfect from day one,” says Scott. “You no longer have to wait for aging to occur.”  Achieving a perfect architectural effect immediately without waiting for change over time is important to the resort and luxury home markets.  These high-end markets demand ready-made finishes but seek the quality of being environmentally friendly, meaning they are safe for people to be around. This appeal is an added bonus when most patina effects are created today using layers of harsh chemicals to encourage the same effect to metal.

There’s one more bonus…cost. Copper is a very expensive metal to use.  We can achieve a similar effect using gates and railings made out of cheaper substrates, like aluminum and steel.  It’s a win-win for the manufacturing and contracting market.

The effect itself can be modified to the buyers’ specs. With this unique proprietary process, different effects can be created.  Similar to what you find in nature, the effect can range from simple distressing to heavily distressed, aged looks. Maui Powder Works can use different colors to create different effects, the sky’s the limit.

You can read more about the process in the August 2018 issue of Powder Coating Magazine. Read more on this about this location in a related article.

Here are the top 10 facts on powder coating.

If you haven’t heard powder coating is a fast-growing industry.  More and more people are coming to custom powder coaters to get their everyday metal projects done. Here are the top 10 facts on powder coating.

Here are answers to the Top 10 most frequently asked questions about powder coating.

1. WHY POWDER COAT?  A powder coated finish offers superior scratch, impact and chemical resistance to metal, wood & even glass products.

2. WHAT ARE EVERYDAY USES?  Powder coating is used in automotive, industrial applications for personal, residential & commercial metal projects.

3. WHAT CAN BE POWDER COATED?  Everything from rims to railings, gate, furniture, lighting, fixtures, furnishings, venting, auto & mechanical parts – just to name a few.

4. WHICH METALS CAN BE COATED?  Aluminum, Galvanized Steel, Stainless & Steel Alloys and some solid Cast Metals. Provided it can hold an electrostatic charge.

5. WHAT POWDERS ARE BEST?  Although there are indoor powders, outdoor-rated powders like TGIC, Polyesters & Urethanes have the most functionality.

6. WHAT ARE FINISHES AVAILABLE?  Smooth, textured, hammer tone and veins-just to name a few. Smooth finishes come in Super Mirror, Semi-Gloss, Satin & Matte.

7. HOW IS IT APPLIED?  Through a process of electrolysis whereby the metal and powder is charged and then cured in an oven up to 400 degrees.

8. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CURE?  Not that long, depending on the size & weight it can take as little as 30min. What’s important is that the powder ‘flow out’ during the curing process.

9. HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?  Generally, metal coatings can last up to 10 years or longer depending on the environment, quality of coating & type of powder.

10. IS POWDER COATING SAFE?  Yes, in fact, because of the low VOCs.  When compared to liquid paint it is far safer for people & the environment.
